Family-friendly fun can be fun both indoors and outdoors this weekend in Milwaukee, so you can make memories no matter the weather! Here are our top picks:

Co-hosted by the Urban Ecology Center and Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail, the 7th Annual Urban Candlelight Hike will take place in Three Bridges Park this Saturday! A 2-mile stretch of the Hank Aaron State Trail will be lit with hundreds of candles, campfires and camaraderie right in the heart of Milwaukee.

The event is free, but you can also purchase a Fun Pass ($10 individual; $20 family) to unlock extras including hot chocolate and pastries from the Urban Ecology Center (while supplies last), plus marshmallow roasting and s’mores at the Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail Fireside Plaza.

TIP: Bring your thermos to save on waste and to take your cocoa on your hike.

In partnership with the Marcus Performing Arts Center and the Milwaukee Theater District, Broadway Skates is back! This year’s edition will highlight the soundtrack from “Shrek – The Musical” ahead of its debut at the Marcus Performing Arts Center (March 22-23).

The free and fun-filled day will feature photo ops, ice skating and special giveaways. Shrek-themed face painting will be provided by 42nd Artist Entertainment, and attendees are encouraged to dress in their favorite Shrek-themed costumes.

Milwaukee Recreation is hosting a free Family Skate Night at the Bay View High School Twilight Center this weekend! Open to ages 10-14 (ages under 10 must be accompanied by an adult for Family Skate Night). Don’t have skates? No problem! Free skate rentals are available.

Take it Outside Days Urban Ecology Center

This free outdoor event is an outdoor celebration of cold-weather activities, including Nordic walking, sauna and cold dip, winter biking, intro to dog sledding with family pets, and knitting and crocheting. Kids can play on the children’s playground, and your pets on the pup playground.

The event is meant to allow people find joy in being in nature and moving their bodies safely in the cold. All skill levels, all ages. Everyone is invited, and it’s free!

Join Milwaukee PBS and Rooted MKE for a special introductory free event for the new animated children’s series from PBS KIDS: “Lyla in the Loop.” Families will get to watch the premiere episode and then participate in an activity. And each family will get a book to take home!

Specially created for ages 4-8, “Lyla in the Loop” focuses on creative expression and flexible step-by-step problem-solving. The series follows Lyla, a dynamic 7-year-old girl who lives in a big city with her close-knit family, her fantastical blue sidekick Stu, and quirky characters in her community. Along the way, Lyla relies on creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills to design and test her ideas.

Nothing beats homemade maple syrup on pancakes! Go through the process of making maple syrup from start to finish at this hands-on workshop. Practice drilling a tree, and see how sap is boiled down. You’ll even get to enjoy some sweet treats!

Tapping kits can be purchased in the Friends of Wehr store for an additional fee. For families with children ages 7 and older. Pre-registration is required.
