Peck & Bushel Organic Orchard: Our Family’s Favorite Apple Picking Spot

Every fall, our family heads out to Peck & Bushel in Colgate, and it’s easily become our favorite apple-picking tradition.

Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Southeastern Wisconsin, Peck & Bushel isn’t just any orchard—it’s the largest certified organic apple orchard in the upper Midwest, with more than 40,000 trees and 30 varieties of organic apples.

And year after year, it never disappoints.

Why We Love Peck & Bushel

First of all, there’s something so special about knowing we’re picking apples from the only certified organic orchard in the region. The apples are incredibly fresh, and there’s always a variety ready for picking.

With 30 different organic varieties, there’s always a surprise waiting for us, and we make it a point to sample a type of apple we’ve never had before. Whether it’s something crisp and sweet or tangy and tart, the variety keeps us coming back year after year!

But the apples are just the beginning.

The Orchard Experience

One of the things that makes Peck & Bushel so special is its breathtaking setting. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the peaceful sight of rolling hills, a charming modern barn, and scenic trees that sways next to a small pond.

The barn itself is a must-visit—it’s packed with adorable rustic items for the home and kitchen, and I always leave with something new.

Plus, it’s where you’ll find the best apple cider around. We never leave without a jug (or two) and the absolute best apple cider doughnuts you’ll ever taste.

Pro Tip: Arrive Early!

Trust us—the secret’s out about how wonderful this place is, and it fills up quickly. We always arrive right when they open, and even then, the parking lot is already starting to fill.

Getting there early means a more peaceful experience, without the big crowds, and more time to savor the beauty of the orchard.

Instagram-Worthy Spots & Nature Trails

Peck & Bushel isn’t just an apple orchard—it’s a beautiful destination. They’ve recently added gorgeous new landscaping and Instagram-worthy spots throughout the property, including a nature trail with a swing and benches.

The kids always love stopping for a swing or posing for family photos along the way. Walking through this forested area feels like stepping into a storybook, with dappled sunlight and the peaceful sounds of nature surrounding you.

And speaking of beauty, the farm’s pollinator plantings are a new highlight! The vibrant hibiscus, dahlias, antique zinnias, and sunflowers add a splash of color to the experience.

A Growing Family Destination

Every year, Peck & Bushel gets better and better. They’ve recently added a new porch venue that overlooks the orchard, complete with a family restroom (a small but welcome perk for families with little ones).

There are also more picnic tables and family yard games, which make it easy to extend your visit and relax after picking apples.

Our Favorite Fall Tradition

At the heart of it all, Peck & Bushel has become our family’s favorite fall outing because it offers so much more than just apple picking. From the scenic nature trails to the delicious doughnuts, every moment here is pure fall magic.

The country setting, with its modern barn, tranquil pond, and expansive orchard, makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. And yet, it still has that small family farm charm—quaint, quiet, and full of heart.

Just don’t forget to grab those cider doughnuts! 🍂🍎
